Acne is an inflammatory condition of the oil producing sebaceous glands that affects both teenagers and adults. Some of the more common causes of flare-ups include hormonal changes, so as those experienced during puberty, pregnancy, and a woman’s menstrual cycle as well as environmental irritants and reactions to skin care products.

 

Hormones and other factors stimulate excess production of an oily substance called sebum, which can clog the skin’s pores. Once clogged, pores can become infected with bacteria, resulting in pimples and inflammation. There are different levels of acne ranging from milder comedonal (blackheads and whiteheads) to moderate, pustular, on to severe cystic acne. In many cases, several or all of these levels of acne can be present on an individual simultaneously.

Acne tends to form on those areas of the skin where sebaceous glands are most plentiful, namely the face, scalp, neck, chest, back, and upper arms and shoulders. If left untreated, acne can be embarrassing, painful, and cause scarring.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) works by shrinking the skin's oil glands to drastically reduce the amount of oil within the pores – reducing comedones. Resistant and Cystic Acne frequently fails to respond to typical measures of treatment. PDT offers a safe, highly successful solution to destroying acne bacteria and treating stubborn acne that is not responding to other treatments.
Levulan® is commonly used in photodynamic acne therapy and has been shown to significantly improve mild to moderate acne. PDT is often an effective alternative for patients whose skin has become resistant to antibiotic treatments over time, and for those who want to avoid the hassle of applying topical ointments and creams. Several types of light sources are commonly used with Levulan® to treat acne, including blue and red light therapy, which, in addition to destroying bacteria, reduces inflammation and redness associated with acne lesions.
